That’s all I’ll say about it, as its best experienced for yourself, but it’s a decent enough story, and a bit sad. And the Mechanist turns out to be a multi-dimensional character, allowing the end of that plotline to play out in many different ways, and thankfully none of them require hardline charisma checks. You bond a little bit with your bot, Ada, who has to come to grips with the guilt of letting her caravan die. The “story” is rather basic, as it has to be, given the time limit. But with the variety of the Mechanist’s creations, you never really known what you’re going to get when you round the next corner. Most have armored heads and torsos, so you want to aim at their arms to take away their weapons (cue the face-lasers) or their legs so they’re immobilized. Robots have always been the best enemies in Fallout 4, because using VATS, it’s a hell of a lot of fun to figure out the best way to cripple each of them. In Automatron, some robots I could one-shot with ease, others would obliterate me with flaming sword arms or face-lasers that could melt my entire health bar in one go.

By the time I finished the game, I was a supreme badass. My main character is level 60, and I stopped playing after I’d found every landmark and had done every side mission I could, plus a few dozen endless radial quests. The difficulty curve is almost hilariously uneven, but in the end, it works out. The second is the lair of the Mechanist itself, an enormous dungeon that might actually be the game’s best, full of twists and turns and traps and lots and lots of robots. The first is a base for the Rust Devils, a new bandit crew who strip and salvage robots for parts, and wear them as armor. The next missions will take you through one existing area you’ve probably already visited, but two new dungeons that are really, really good.
